Early Years Curriculum

 

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum is the statutory framework that sets out children’s learning and development from birth until the end of the Reception year.  It gives children a broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life. 

Within the EYFS, children are given opportunities to play and explore, to become involved in a variety of practical learning opportunities and to think and make links in their learning.

At George Washington Primary School, the Reception children are encouraged to direct and steer the opportunities and themes of learning to ensure that they match their individual interests and next steps.  We value the uniqueness of each child and work hard to ensure that our curriculum caters for the needs of each and every individual.  This is in terms of their next steps for learning, their personal well-being and their levels of motivation and engagement.   Our curriculum is flexible and therefore suitable for very young children, whilst it also ensures that we are preparing them for their transition into Key Stage One.

 

The areas of development within the EYFS are divided into 2 groups:

 

It is essential that children develop a foundation in these 3 Prime areas: 

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal Social and Emotional Development

These prime areas are fundamental in supporting the effective development in all other areas.

 

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas:

 

 

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

These specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society.

At George Washington Primary School, we value the partnership we have with our parents and carers and we welcome and value the contributions you can make towards your child’s education and development.  We pride ourselves upon having an open-door policy, whereby key workers are available daily, at the beginning and end of each session, to talk to you about your child’s education and welfare.  We also host a range of activities and family learning sessions throughout the year so that you get the opportunity to become involved in your child’s learning journey.

 

We hugely value the importance of making every child feel warm, cared for, safe and secure.  From the start of our induction process in the summer term, your child will be allocated a key worker.  This person will get to know you and your child very well and will build a positive relationship with your whole family.  At George Washington Primary School, your child will be in either red group, blue group, green group or purple group.

 

We are very lucky at George Washington Primary School to have a stimulating but calm learning environment that caters for learning both indoors and outdoors.  It encourages children to take risks in their learning and make progress in their development through exploration and active play.
