Homework & Reading

Reception

In Reception, children should read, practise their tricky words and revise the sounds from their phonics books for a small amount of time every day.  Little and often is the key.

  • Reading books are changed at different points during the week and so book bags need to be in school every day. Your child’s reading book will have been introduced to them in school and then this should be read frequently throughout the week at home.
  • Tricky words are updated every Friday.
  • Sound books are updated every Thursday so please encourage your child to leave their sounds book with their key worker on a Thursday morning.

Home challenges are given out from time to time relating to other areas of the curriculum.

Year One

In Year One, children should read, practise their tricky words and sounds and learn their weekly spellings for a small amount of time every day.  Once again, little and often is the key.

  • Reading books are changed every Tuesday or Wednesday. Your child’s reading book will have been introduced to them in school and then this should be read frequently throughout the week at home.
  • Tricky words are updated every Friday.
  • Spellings are given out every Monday for a challenge the following Monday.

Home challenges are given out from time to time relating to other areas of the curriculum.

Year Two

In Year Two, children should read, learn their weekly spellings and practise times table and division facts (2, 3, 5 and 10) for a small amount of time every day.  As noted above, little and often is the key.

  • Reading books are changed weekly.
  • Spellings are given out every Monday for a challenge on the following Friday.
  • Times table and division facts are given as a pack at the start of Year Two and should be practised throughout the year. These are tested once a week.

Additional homework is given at different points throughout the year, although this is not necessarily weekly.  This is dependent on what children have learned or need more help with.

Year Three

Year Three children receive spellings on a Monday and a midweek spelling worksheet. They also receive maths homework on a Friday to be returned the following Tuesday. They are expected to practise their times tables for a weekly test.

Year Four

Year Four children receive spellings on a Monday to be tested on a Friday. They are expected to practise their times tables for a weekly test.

Year Five

Year Five children receive spellings and spelling homework on a Monday to be returned on the following Monday. They are also expected to practise their times tables for a weekly test held on Wednesday and Thursday in 5JP and 5AM respectively.

Year Six

Year Six children receive spellings on a Monday to be tested on a Friday. They are expected to practise their times tables for a weekly test. Year 6 children also receive maths and/or English homework on a Monday and a Friday.

From time to time alternative or additional homework may be set by the class teacher.
